Key takeaways
- South Lake County is best explored as a loop: Middletown for town-based activities, Hidden Valley Lake for recreation and indoor play, and Cobb for mountain and forest time.
- The strongest free or low-cost options are parks, trails and Lake County Library programs; check current calendars before going.
- For weather-proof family plans, keep a short list of indoor options that includes play spaces, martial arts, public birthday venues and scheduled community events.
What we mean by South Lake County
This guide is about southern Lake County, California — especially Middletown, Hidden Valley Lake and Cobb. That distinction matters online because searches for 'South Lake County' can otherwise drift toward places outside California.
Locally, the three communities function as one activity area. A family may live in Hidden Valley Lake, use the library and pool in Middletown, hike on Cobb, and drive back down the hill for a class or birthday party. Thinking of the region as one loop produces far more options than searching each town in isolation.
Free and low-cost outdoor things to do
Middletown Trailside Park is one of the simplest places to get outside without turning the day into an expedition. County information lists parking, picnic tables, restrooms and walkways, and the wider recreation system identifies it as a hiking and bird-watching location.
Up the mountain, Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest is the larger adventure. CAL FIRE currently lists hiking, biking and equestrian use on reconstructed trails, plus seasonal camping. Because it is a working demonstration forest, trail and area closures can occur and current conditions should be checked before leaving home.
Families willing to drive a little farther toward Lower Lake can also use Anderson Marsh State Historic Park for marsh, wildlife, walking and local history on the southeast edge of Clear Lake.

Indoor family activities and rainy-day options
South County is outdoor-heavy, so rainy, smoky or very hot days can make the activity list feel much shorter. Middletown Library is one of the most dependable free indoor resources, with recurring programs that have included storytime, LEGO, chess, Nintendo Switch and Dungeons & Dragons. The specific calendar changes, so use the county library calendar rather than relying on an old schedule.
Hidden Valley Lake also has The Grove, an indoor recreational play space with open play and children's programming. It fills a different niche from a class: somewhere younger children can move and play when a park is not practical.
Elevate's Middletown mats are another indoor option. In addition to regular martial arts classes, we can open the space for public birthday parties, daytime children's programs, Parents' Night Out events, stranger-danger and personal-safety workshops, and occasional rainy-day play groups. Those event-style offerings are scheduled rather than daily, so families should check the current calendar or ask what is coming up.
Birthday parties that get kids moving
A birthday does not have to be limited to families already enrolled in a program. Public party venues are particularly useful in South County because they remove the weather gamble and keep the activity contained in one place.
Elevate hosts martial-arts birthday parties for the public in Middletown. The point is not to turn the party into a formal class; it is to give the group structured games, movement and a memorable shared activity on the mats. Families who do not train with us are welcome to book parties as well.
The Grove in Hidden Valley Lake also advertises private parties, which gives families another local indoor choice. For summer birthdays, parks, pools and picnic areas expand the list substantially.
Ideas by age
Preschoolers usually need shorter outings and fewer transitions. Storytime, playgrounds, indoor open play and short structured movement classes are easier to manage than a half-day itinerary.
Elementary-age kids can handle more variety: the pool, trails, library clubs, martial arts, birthday events and daytime programs. This is also a good age for family bike rides and short hikes where the destination is concrete.
Teenagers often need something more purposeful than 'go outside.' Boggs Mountain, golf, library gaming and D&D programs, martial arts on the adult schedule, volunteering and community events all give them something to do rather than somewhere merely to be.
Adults have their own South County list: hiking and biking, golf, arts events, wellness destinations, community festivals and adult martial arts or fitness training.
Build a year-round list, not just a summer list
Summer is easy: pool days, mountain time, picnics and longer evenings. The harder months are the ones worth planning for. A useful local family list includes at least one free indoor option, one paid indoor option, one outdoor place that works in cool weather and one event calendar worth checking.
For South County, that can be as simple as Middletown Library, an indoor play or martial-arts option, Trailside Park, and the county calendar. Once those four are saved on your phone, 'what are we going to do today?' gets much easier to answer.
Common questions
Parent Pro Tip
Solve for the drive, honestly. In a rural county the activity that survives is the one that fits the commute, the work shift and the other children in the car. A slightly less perfect program eight minutes away will out-perform the ideal one forty minutes away every single time.
- Map the realistic door-to-door time on a weekday, not a Saturday.
- Check whether siblings can be at the same place at the same time.
- Pick the schedule that survives your busiest month.
