Key takeaways
- BJJ is grappling-focused and runs 90 minutes; kickboxing and MMA run 45.
- None of the three requires prior experience or a fitness baseline to begin.
- The best choice is the one you will keep showing up for.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
BJJ is grappling: controlling position, escaping bad positions and applying submissions, mostly on the ground. There is no striking. Progress is very tangible early on, because you can feel the difference between being stuck and getting out.
Classes run 90 minutes, which gives time for warm-up, technique and live practice at a controlled pace. It tends to appeal to people who like problem-solving and do not mind close contact.
Kickboxing
Kickboxing is striking on the feet — punches, kicks, movement, defense — usually on pads and bags. It is the most immediately familiar of the three, and the easiest to scale to your own conditioning because you set the pace on the pads.
Classes run 45 minutes. It suits people who want a strong conditioning element alongside technique, and who prefer less close contact than grappling involves.
MMA
MMA combines striking and grappling, including the transitions between them. It is broader by nature, which means slower progress in any single area and a wider set of skills overall.
Classes run 45 minutes. It works well for people who already have some background in one range, or who simply want variety rather than depth in one discipline.
How to choose
There is no wrong entry point. The most useful filter is honest: which of these will you still be doing in six months, on a Tuesday, when you are tired? Consistency beats optimization by a wide margin.
- Prefer problem-solving and do not mind close contact — try BJJ
- Want conditioning with technique and less grappling — try kickboxing
- Want variety across ranges — try MMA
- Only have 45 minutes on a weeknight — kickboxing or MMA fit more easily
Elevate Martial Arts trains students from Middletown, Clearlake and the surrounding Lake County communities.
A note for teens
Teens train on the adult schedule. Coaches assign training partners deliberately and supervise rounds — teens are never matched by size alone. If you are unsure which class time suits a teen beginner, contact us and we will recommend one.
